What kind of motorcycles are NOT street legal?

Hey I’m getting my M2 (Ontario) a little bit later this year through a safety course.

Are dirt-bikish 250cc motorcycles generally legal? I’ve noticed they are cheaper and since I am a student, that would be ideal.

Or if dirt bikes aren’t legal, what’s the next best thing?
